San Francisco Vacation: Family Style

Sure, San Francisco’s known for its amazing dining, entertainment venues, art, theatre and nearby wineries. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an abundance of kid-friendly activities for the whole family to enjoy. So load everyone into that rental car or minivan and experience these top spots:

  • San Francisco Zoo. This is Northern California's largest zoological park and features exotic and endangered wildlife, good old grizzly bears and an African Savanna habitat. Some kid favorites include the Children's Zoo, Penguin Island, Koala Crossing, and Gorilla Preserve. There’s even a carousel and miniature steam train. Open daily 10am-5pm.
  • Zeum. Loaded with interactive exhibits, your children will love this arts and tech museum for kids. There’s a music studio where kids can produce and take home their own music video, a digital workshop for making artistic creations, and a claymation studio.
  • Lombard Street. Who doesn’t love the "crookedest street" in America? Drive your rental car to the top of Lombard on Hyde Street and then drive down. Your kids will have a blast.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf. A family could spend days here! But here are the places that are likely to catch your kids’ attention.
    • Submarine USS Pampanito. You can actually climb inside this authentic, World War II submarine – and marvel at the fact that 80 men lived actually lived for weeks on end in its amazingly tight quarters. You can choose the iPod audio tour for a fee – or just walk in and take a look around. There’s also a gift store filled with goodies, video/DVDs and memorabilia. This National Historic Landmark’s hours range depending on the time of year.
    • Wax Museum. A little eerie but a lot of fun, your family can get up-close and personal with the most famous people in the world, past and present.
    • Alcatraz Cruises. What better way to spend the day with the family than in prison? Operated by the National Park Service, cruises to the infamous prison start at 9am and continue throughout the day.
    • Aquarium of the Bay. You’ll feel like you’re swimming in the ocean in this aquarium’s impressive 300 feet of clear tunnels. You experience thousands of amazing marine animals along the way. You can even touch sharks and rays! It’s open daily except Christmas.

So, what are you waiting for? Hop in your rental car and spend the day experiencing all the family fun that San Francisco has to offer.
