Historically, Thrifty has employed a franchise strategy to become a major global brand; however, the company in 2002 elected to shift to operating some major U.S. markets corporately. Today, 65% of its retail outlets in North America are franchised (and over 90% globally), owned by independent businesses that are licensed to use our trade names, systems, and technologies. From its corporate headquarters, Thrifty centralizes all travel agent commission payments and operates from its headquarters travel agent and consumer inquiry departments, each with toll free numbers, 1-800-TA-BUCKS and 1-800-334-1705 respectively.
Thrifty is one of the largest car rental systems in the world. Founded in 1958, we have expanded to over 1,100 rental locations in most major countries. System-wide revenue and reservations have grown substantially over the years.
Our Franchise Owners enjoy a sound mix of business balanced between the airport market (related to airport arrivals) and the local market (involving rentals within the customer's home city). Also, Thrifty receives a large portion of its airport business from travel agents through its central reservation system, which is also accessible to agents and consumers at Thrifty's web site. Support services are provided by Thrifty for each of these segments.
