How to drive safely during April showers

We all know the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers." But April showers also bring unpredictable and potentially dangerous driving conditions. Like driving during a winter storm, driving in the rain during business travel requires taking extra precautions. To stay safe, follow these tips:
Take it slow
The easiest way to stay safe while driving during a thunderstorm it to take it slow. Stopping and slowing down requires a bit of extra time when it's raining, so leave plenty of space between your car rental and the one in front of you. Don't assume that if you slam on the brakes your car will be able to stop immediately.
Keep it bright
Even if it's only sprinkling, you should turn on your headlights to make it easier for other drivers to see you. It will also improve your ability to see the road and other vehicles around you. Just make sure you don't turn on your high beams - they will reflect off the water droplets and impair your visibility.
If you hit a patch of water and begin to hydroplane, sliding uncontrollably, don't panic! Instead, slowly let your foot off of the accelerator and steer straight until you are able to regain control of the car.
