TULSA, Okla. – Thrifty Car Rental was named one of the Wireless 25 Innovators for 2001 by Computerworld ROI , a bimonthly supplement to IDG’s Computerworld. Thrifty was the only company in the car rental category to be honored for successfully developing and employing wireless technologies to accomplish strategic business goals in a new and innovative way.
Other Wireless 25 Innovators included Bass Hotels & Resorts, E*TRADE Group, Inc., Fidelity Investments, Ford Motor Company, NASA, Pfizer, Inc. and United Parcel Service.
Thrifty was honored for its on-line wireless application that allows customers to book, review or cancel their Thrifty Car Rental reservation using a wireless PDA. Consumers can book a car rental reservation from any one of Thrifty’s top 80 North American locations in about three minutes. Customers also have the option of entering a corporate account code, Blue Chip Express Rental Program® account number or special promotional codes. The wireless application is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be downloaded free of charge from www.THRIFTY.com.
“The Wireless 25 represent the best and the brightest, not to mention the boldest of business and technology strategists,” said Julia King, executive editor of Computerworld ROI. “They’re applying still-emerging and fast-changing technologies to solve critical business issues plus establish themselves as long term leaders in their industries.” Selections were made by a panel of Computerworld and ComputerworldROI editors from nominations from 115 companies representing business, education and government organizations. The final list of 25 innovators was chosen based on the strategic nature of the wireless project, the risks associated with the project, and the degree to which the wireless project has yielded a positive return on investment measured in both financial and non-financial terms.
ComputerworldROI is a bimonthly supplement to IDG’s Computerworld that focuses specifically on information technology payback. Its target readers are senior executives and business strategists who play a leadership role in explaining and justifying technology choices to fellow executives. Rather than pure technologists, ROI’s readers are people who understand how critical technology is to business success, and who must consistently find new ways to leverage that understanding.
