Fun things to do in Utah
During a trip to Utah, you will have plenty to fill your travel itinerary with once you land at Salt Lake City International Airport. This mountainous metropolis is loaded with attractions, from fantastic parks to unique cultural hot spots to some of the best in winter sports. Due to the city's love for the great outdoors, a lot of these hot spots are located outside. Salt Lake City is also a wonderful place to take the kids along, as there are many sites specifically catered to families and children. Be sure hop in your Thrifty rental car and explore all of these great things to do while you are in town:
Utah Olympic Park
Salt Lake City was the gracious host for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and today, you can still take a tour of this beautiful facility, complete with the world's highest-altitude ski jumps. Adrenaline junkies will love the 80-mile-per-hour bobsled track, and if you are lucky, you may be able to see some of the world's best winter athletes train for their next upcoming event.
The Great Salt Lake
It would be a shame to hop on your return flight at Salt Lake City International Airport without catching a glimpse of the city's namesake. One of the best spots to enjoy your time on the water is at Antelope Island, which is just a quick 50-mile trip from the city in your rental car. However, there are several free access points closer to town if you are pressed for time. Here you can relax with a lakeside picnic, go boating or fishing and take a long hike along the water.
One attraction that is unlike anything else in the country is Temple Square, the international center for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although non-practicing visitors are not allowed in the temple, you can tour the grounds around the building and learn about the religion through on-site exhibits. If you can snag tickets, a performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is top-notch, and Temple Square is especially beautiful during Christmas when the grounds are adorned with twinkling lights.
If you plan on visiting Salt Lake City between June and October, treat yourself with a trip to the expansive outdoor market at Pioneer Square Park. You can sample local goods, ranging from salsa to pastries and hear banjo players and fiddlers as you wander the stalls.
