If you enjoy ice cream floats, send your thanks to Detroit. Sander Confectionery ran out of sweet cream in 1875 and used ice cream instead, accidentally earning a place in the history books by creating the ice cream float. Fans of more savory junk food unit here in the city that eats the most potato chips out of any in the world, according to the Detroit city government website. The local hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings, may have something to do with that as their fans nervously munch away while watching the team battle their way through exciting post-season games. Head to Detroit for some Michigan fun at these great locations:

Joe Louis Arena
Drive your Detroit rental car to this 20,058-seat arena, one of three in the National Hockey League that do not have a corporate naming sponsor. You can see a concert, circus, ice show, or professional and college hockey games here. The Detroit Red Wings NHL team has called this venue home since it's opening in December 1979. The team has the longest active playoff streak in North American sports, and has won the Stanley Cup 11 times. If you visit during a hockey game, you might find an octopus has been tossed onto the ice. In 1952, two brothers threw one onto the rink, hoping its eight tentacles would represent the eight games the team needed to win the Stanley Cup. The team won and the octopus has been considered good luck since then.

Andre's Carriage Tours
Take a tour of the Motor City via the only carriage in the world that is entirely electronic and emission free. Andre's has been around for 60 years so they know just which sites to take visitors to, from sports stadiums to historical locations and everything in between. Six adults can easily fit in each carriage and the top can be up or down depending on the weather. Drivers are outfitted in 1700s French attire, a white tuxedo and top hat and really add to the ambiance of the ride. Families and couples love this great way to see Detroit. You can even bring your dog!

Eastern Market
If you're in town on a Tuesday or Saturday, drive your Detroit rental car to this eclectic market. Over 250 independent merchants and vendors serve thousands of people each week at this six block gathering. Food and fares from Michigan, Ohio and Ontario are available here in the form of produce, meat, crafts and more. Get a great meal at one of the many food trucks or restaurant vendors around the market. There is also community exercise classes, educational events, culinary demonstrations, and nonprofit outreach opportunities on both Tuesdays and Saturdays. You're sure to find something you're interested in at this Detroit staple.
