Atlanta for the health nut

Monday, June 25, 2012 3:44:17 PM

When you're looking for the next great spot to visit for a sporty, outdoor vacation, don't overlook the dynamic city of Atlanta. Although Coca Cola might be the first thing that pops into your mind when you think of Atlanta, the city's saccharine attractions make up only the smallest proportion of its accolades. So what are you waiting for? Book the plane, plan your car rental in Atlanta, and head down to Georgia!

Traverse the terrain

The city is anything but flat, so one of the best ways to get an overarching vista of the area is by parking your Atlanta car rental at the base of Stone Mountain and hiking up. The mountain rises 700 feet in a mere 1 mile, so you'll have to time yourself for this ascent.

Atlanta's numerous well-kept parks also provide a great variety of bike, jogging and walking paths, so plan on making a few in-town pit stops in your Atlanta rent a car during your journey. Piedmont Park is one of the best spots for an early-morning jog, a daybreak swim, morning roller skate, or a quick game of tennis. If you're lucky, your visit may coincide with one of Piedmont's great local workshops - tango classes, vegetable canning tutorials, and gardening demonstrations are all available.

Get game

If you like a little bit more competition in your natural experience, head to one of Atlanta's 100-plus golf courses to test out your skills on the green. Each course offers a little something different, so you may want to visit a few to find your match - to a tee! Echelon Golf Course, just outside of city limits, features placid lakes and stoic evergreens, while Alfred Tup Holmes, located in town, features challenging sloped hills and narrow fairways. Built atop a Civil War battleground, you'll literally be standing on history at this course, and maybe, you'll even make your own -  that is, if you're game's that good.
