Agricultural Travel: NY Grape Escape
While most people associate great American wineries with California, there are more than just a handful of New York State wineries to experience – and they’re just a short drive from Syracuse in your rental car.
- The Beak and Skiff Apple Farm Winery. Located in Lafayette, this is one of the most unique wineries in New York. Once an apple business at the turn of the century, today it’s evolved into a diversified apple farm that also houses a winery! In 2001, they started with a hard cider. They’ve since added six more apple-based wines and hard ciders. You’ll also find a quaint country store and a yearly apple-picking season.
- Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. This winery is in Waterloo, in the heart of Finger Lakes. Over a dozen wineries dot this lovely trail, which also boasts scenic waterfall views.
- Chateau Lafayette Reneau. Located in Hector and nestled on 140 acres of vineyards, ponds, and woodlands, the views alone are worth the drive. You’ll immediately be drawn to the brick house and renovated barn/winery with panoramic views of Seneca Lake.
Of course, with all the wine tasting you’ll be doing, a designated driver is a must. But, with the top down on that rental car (weather allowing), it’s a great way to spend a day or two in Central New York.
