Free attractions in Montreal

There's no place like Montreal. As the cultural capital of Quebec, it's brimming with gorgeous Gothic Revival architecture, historic sites and a vibrant nightlife, not to mention a plethora of eateries, museums and entertainment venues. Visiting this city can be an expensive ordeal, but with Thrifty Car Rental, you can save money on transportation (Thrifty offers excellent Montreal deals on a wide range of Montreal rental cars) and by sticking to these free attractions:

Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

You can drive your Montreal car rental along Sherbrooke Street West in the downtown region and find the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Admission is open to the public at this renowned institution, aside from select special exhibitions. Guests can peruse a massive collection featuring more than 35,000 pieces from all around the globe - one of the most impressive in North America. These works span a wide spectrum of genres, from ancient times to  present day. The Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion, for instance, is filled with pieces by artists from Quebec and other Canadian cities, while the Bourgie room displays a stunning array of Tiffany stained glass.

Notre-Dame Basilica

The Notre-Dame Basilica is perhaps the most iconic building in Montreal. The Baroque-style structure was completed in 1683, when it was originally operated by the Jesuits. It was rebuilt and expanded nearly 200 years later and dedicated to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, though a fire meant much of the building had to be replaced. While there's a fee to tour the church, everyone is welcome to come by for free on Sundays for mass. It's truly a unique experience that lets you hear a 25-person choir sing with the accompaniment of an organ. Those who attend service can park their Montreal rental cars for free in the visitors lot.
