Start the new year with a renewed awareness of driving safety

If you're planning business travel this year, it's important to be aware of new traffic laws that were enacted in 2012, and ways that you can increase your safety while on the road. Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety (Advocates) recently released the tenth annual "Roadmap of State Highway Safety Laws," and representatives discussed several new laws that were passed in the United States.

Text messaging restrictions were adopted in Alabama, Idaho and West Virginia. Missouri, Virginia and Mississippi all implemented stricter impaired driving penalties. Advocates said there are still needs for seat belt enforcement laws in 18 states, and 15 states still need an all-driver text messaging restriction. These changes may come to fruition in 2013, and there are other ways drivers can monitor their safety in their car rentals.

Tips include:

  • Avoid high-tempo tunes when on the road. According to a London University study, these increase the risk of speeding and erratic driving.
  • Always allow at least two-seconds of distance between you and the car in front of you. Double this in wet weather.
  • Make sure to completely clear away snow and ice before driving. Allowing yourself just a "peephole" is dangerous.
