Tips for dressing appropriately while traveling for business

Business professionals need to wear classy and work-appropriate attire at all times, but it can be difficult to discern apparel guidelines when traveling. On business trips, not only is appropriateness important - travelability is also a major concern.

Fast Company recommends bringing one color of pants or skirt, one matching jacket and one pair of shoes. Rather than taking up precious cargo space with numerous outfits, pack your one matching suit (along with a variety of shirts and accessories) in a carry on bag. Wear your workout or sports outfit and all weather-related items, such as coats or boots, on your plane ride to minimize luggage stress. Because you'll be packing your business outfit, make sure to invest in wrinkle-free clothing.

In addition to travelability and cargo efficiency, business travel demands that clothes exhibit a certain level of professionalism and formality. Many variations of "business-professional" and "business-casual" attire will likely be needed for client meetings and luncheons, so its best to stick with safe attire options when you know you'll be meeting with clients and other business professionals.

For women, the Houston Chronicle recommends a neutrally toned suit skirt (longer than knee-length), a matching jacket and blouse. For men, similar dress would be appropriate: Travelers can't go wrong with neutrally toned slacks and a matching suit jacket, which are always culturally appropriate.
