What to do if your flight's canceled

There's nothing worse than arriving at your gate just to hear your flight's been canceled. This is especially true for business travelers who may be chasing the clock to make an important appointment. Not only do you run the risk of missing your meeting, a delayed arrival time could mean that all of the discount car rentals are sold out.

To make the best of a bad situation, it's important that you take the necessary steps in response to a canceled flight. Here are a few tips to follow while you keep your cool:

  1. Talk to someone who works for your airline to find out what their policies are and if they have any openings on future outgoing flights.
  2. Check the weather predictions for your current and final destinations - is a car rental an option?
  3. Book a new flight as soon as possible if your end location is too far to drive to.
  4. Contact your business colleagues to let them know that you'll be delayed or unable to attend the meeting. If necessary, it may be best to reschedule for the following day or have a video conference instead.

While business trips can come up unexpectedly, it's always best to book your flights, rental car and hotel as soon as possible. When able, you should plan for delays (especially in the winter) by choosing a flight that gets in the day before your planned meeting.
