If you're on the go in your car rental, it might be hard to stick to a healthy diet. But when you're on business travel, you can take control of your meals whether you're eating out or packing food.
You can find healthy, low-cost meals at fast food restaurants, contrary to popular belief. One healthy surprise is McDonald's, which offers a low-fat yogurt-and-granola parfait as well as oatmeal. Another healthy choice is Panera Bread, and has more than 1,230 locations nationwide according to Health Magazine. At Panera, you can choose fruit instead of chips, and low-fat soups and whole-grain sandwiches. Whenever you're choosing a prepared meal on the road, ask for a nutrition chart and order foods that are low in sodium and saturated fat.
There are plenty of choices if you would prefer to pack your own snack. Foods that don't require refrigeration or extensive prep time include nuts or trail mix, low-sugar energy bars, fruit, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Try to choose foods that are high in protein - such as peanuts - to keep you full longer. Also, pack water so you stay hydrated, which can help you stay alert and keep you from feeling hungry.
