Whether you're a business traveler or vacationer, getting restful sleep while away is essential. Adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night so their bodies and minds can fully restore and be prepared for the day ahead. But with the bustle of going out of town for work, not to mention jet​ lag, it can be difficult to keep your sleep schedule on track. Try these tips for maintaining a healthy sleep schedule during your excursion:

Turn your hotel into home
While some can zonk out anywhere, trying to fall asleep in a new surrounding can be difficult for many people. If you have this problem, try making your hotel room as much like your bedroom as possible. If you have a favorite pillow or blanket, be sure to bring them along. Those who are used to sleeping beside a partner may find themselves lonely for their bedtime companion. In this case, you might try snuggling up with a sweater or other piece of clothing that smells of him or her.

Rest on the plane
If you know you're not going to be able to get enough sleep during your travels, play catch-up during your flight. Use a mask to keep out light and noise-canceling headphones to reduce distracting sounds. A neck pillow and blanket may also be helpful in getting you into a restful state for your nap. Just be sure you're entirely awake and alert before hopping into your long term car rental.
