Tips for staying calm on the go

Sometimes, when you're out on business travel, even the best laid plans go awry. Whether you're hit with a snowstorm and have to navigate your long term car rental through blowing snow or your flight home is canceled, it's important to stay calm. Here are some tips to do just that:

Stay positive
While you may not know where you are going to stay tonight because you are temporarily stranded at the airport, try to look on the bright side. Perhaps you had a really good meeting today and can't wait to see what next step to take to help a new client. Or think about the fact that there are good restaurants to eat at while you're stuck at the airport. Take note of positive aspects to help minimize the effects of the not-so-good things.

Go AWOL
If you are constantly connected to your clients, colleagues and supervisors, it can be really taxing. You may find yourself under immense amounts of stress simply because you make yourself instantly reachable. To avoid this, take some time to turn off your phone or ignore email. Set your status to "do not disturb" or "in flight," and people will understand that you need some time to yourself.
