Visit Staten Island: Into the Boroughs

New York City has no shortage of amazing sights, sounds, tastes and smells to discover. But, with the exception of Manhattan, few tourists bother to hop in a rental car and venture into the city’s boroughs. Staten Island is one of these boroughs—and it’s packed with museums, attractions and historic “must-sees.” Here are a few great places to visit:

  • Historic Neighborhoods. St. George, Tompkinsville, Park Hill, and Stapleton, are home to St. George Historic District and The St. Paul’s Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which are lined with beautiful Victorian homes.
  • F.D.R Boardwalk. Located in the The South Shore, this two and one-half mile long boardwalk is the fourth longest in the world.
  • Richmond Town. Here, you’ll find New York City’s 100-acre living history village and museum complex. Visitors can explore the diversity of the American experience, especially that of Staten Island and its neighboring communities, from the colonial period to the present. You can tour 15 restored homes, a museum, as well as commercial and civic buildings.
  • Staten Island Zoo. This is a great way to spend the day. Check out the many exhibits and attractions at this amazing zoo, which opened in 1936.

It’s easy to overlook the boroughs with so many things to see in the city—but a side trip to Staten Island is a day well spent.
