At the time of rental, Thrifty offers for purchase at the option of the renter, Loss Damage Waiver ("LDW"), , Personal Accident Insurance ("PAI") and Personal Effects Insurance ("PEI") ( PAI and PEI are sold together as one product (“P&P”)), and Liability Insurance Supplement ("LIS"). The cost, coverage, provider and availability vary by location, vehicle category and rate.

The optional products offered by Thrifty may duplicate coverage provided by your personal automobile insurance or insurance you may have through another source. Purchase of optional products is not required to rent the vehicle. Separate brochures available at the rental location summarize the optional products.

You are absolutely liable for any loss or damage to the vehicle, even if someone else caused it or the cause is unknown, whether due to theft, fire, hail, flood, collision, vandalism, or any other cause, subject to limitations imposed by the law where the vehicle is rented.

However, in the U.S., if you purchase the optional LDW plan, we will waive your responsibility for loss or damage to the vehicle in full or in part (depending on the LDW plan you accept). LDW is not insurance.

LDW does not apply if: (1) you use the vehicle in violation of the Rental Agreement; (2) you fail to remove the keys, or close and lock all windows, doors and trunk, and the vehicle is stolen or vandalized; (3) you fail to notify us and the police immediately after the loss; and (4) you fail to pay the charges under the Rental Agreement; or (5) as allowed by state law.

If you do not purchase LDW and the vehicle is lost or damaged, your liability will not exceed the full value of the vehicle, plus:

  • Actual towing and storage charges;
  • Loss of use, regardless of fleet utilization;
  • Diminution in value, regardless of whether the vehicle is repaired or not;
  • All rental charges through the date you report the incident if not returnable or the return date, whichever is later;
  • Any out-of-pocket expenses incurred by us as a result of the loss or damage to the vehicle;
  • An administrative fee.

Before deciding whether to purchase LDW, you may wish to determine whether your own automobile insurance or credit card agreement provides you coverage for rental vehicle damage or loss and determine the amount of the deductible under your own insurance coverage. The purchase of LDW is not mandatory. LDW is not insurance.

By signing the Rental Agreement, you agree to pay us any amount not covered by any insurance, credit, or charge card or other coverage you may have. However, your responsibility will not exceed those damages expressly permitted by the applicable law.

P&P includes Personal Accident Insurance ("PAI") and Personal Effects Coverage ("PEC"). Where offered, they must be purchased together.

  1. PAI provides benefits to you and your passengers for accidental medical expenses, ambulance expenses and accidental death benefits, subject to the applicable limits, during the rental. If this optional coverage is purchased by a renter, the renter is covered 24 hours a day for all accidents, whether the renter is actually in the rental vehicle or not at the time of the accident. Passengers in a Thrifty vehicle are only covered for accidents occurring while they occupy the Thrifty vehicle. Coverage is subject to various exclusions, terms and conditions.
  2. PEC insures the covered personal effects of the renter and any member of the renter's immediate family traveling with the renter. A member of a renter's immediate family must permanently reside in the renter's household. If this optional coverage is purchased by the renter, PEI covers only personal effects with which the renter or immediate family member are traveling.  The total maximum coverage in any rental period is $1, 800. Coverage is subject to various exclusions, terms and conditions. PEC pays covered claims even if the renter's homeowner's policy provides coverage.

Personal Accident and Personal Effects Coverage (PAI/PEC) (Canada) In Canada, where available, optional Personal Accident Insurance and Personal Effects Coverage (PAI/PEC) may be purchased. Where offered, they must be purchased together. PAI provides coverage for accidental death and/or dismemberment caused by an accident, subject to applicable limits and in accordance with a schedule of benefits. The renter will be covered for any such accident during the rental period, limited benefits are also payable to passengers who may be injured in an accident but only while they are occupants of the rental car. Coverage is subject to various exclusions, terms and conditions.

PEC provides coverage for covered personal effects owned by any covered person while such personal effects are in the rental car. Maximum coverage in each rental period is $500 per covered person up to a maximum of three (3) persons, after a deductible of $25 per covered claim. Total benefits in any rental period are limited to $1,500. Coverage is subject to various exclusions, terms and conditions.

You are absolutely liable for any third-party claims for bodily injury, including death, and property damage resulting from an automobile accident in the Thrifty vehicle during the rental period.

However, to protect yourself against this liability, you may purchase Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS), where available.

If accepted, LIS provides the renter or any additional authorized operator listed in the Rental Agreement (excluding the renter's and any additional authorized operator’s family members related by blood, marriage or adoption and any other person residing with the renter or additional operator), with automobile liability coverage against third party claims for bodily injury, including death, and property damage resulting from an automobile accident in the Thrifty vehicle, during the rental period, in excess of the coverage provided under the Rental Agreement up to a maximum protection of $1,000,000 combined single limit (CSL) per occurrence in all states but California and Florida where the coverage for liability only is $2,000,000.

The availability, cost and coverage can vary from location to location depending on the program details. Check with the rental location for details of their program. LIS also provides uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage for bodily injury up to $1,000,000 per accident. LIS does not apply in Mexico. Coverage is subject to various exclusions, terms and conditions.

The minimum age to rent a Thrifty® vehicle at most Thrifty locations in the United States and Canada is 20 years of age. There are three additional operator pricing options: (1) renter under 25; (2) additional operator; and (3) additional operator under 25. Only those listed on the Rental Agreement or the Additional Operator Information form are authorized to drive the vehicle.

All additional authorized operators are required to qualify to drive the Thrifty vehicle. To qualify, Thrifty requires additional operators to satisfy our minimum age requirements, have a valid driver's license, present a major credit card and pay an additional operator fee.

However, the following additional operators do not need to pay an additional operator fee or separately qualify as long as they meet our minimum age requirements and have a valid drivers' license:

  1. Government renters on official orders,
  2. Corporate account customers on corporate rate plans,
  3. Drivers/companions of physically impaired customers;

Additional operators cannot extend or modify the Rental Agreement (no car classification changes such as upgrades). A vehicle exchange may take place during the original rental dates; it cannot however, exceed the dates of the original rental period. See General Policies for details.

The renter must refill the gas tank of the vehicle within a 10-mile radius of the rental return facility and present a fuel receipt to avoid a refueling charge unless the renter chooses the Fuel Purchase Option (FPO). FPO: No need to refuel the vehicle before you return. Purchase the gas in the tank at time of rental and you can return at any level. Price is competitive with local pump prices. NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN FOR UNUSED FUEL. Or Thrifty refuels for you. Return the car with the gas at any level. Price is for fuel and refueling service combined.
