Free and cheap places to visit in Rhode Island

As Rhode Island's capital, Providence has more attractions and entertainment opportunities than any other city in the state. Visitors are attracted here for the gorgeous waterfront, lush parks and rich colonial history. However, it's also the largest city in the state, spanning eight districts such as the popular Downcity, Federal Hill and College Hill. Guests generally need Rhode Island rental cars to traverse the city, which is why Thrifty Car Rental offers such good Rhode Island deals. After you pick up your vehicle, head out to these exciting attractions:

Museum of Natural History & Planetarium

Hop in a Rhode Island car rental and head to the Museum of Natural History & Planetarium. While admission isn't free, you can get in for only $2 per person. Walk through galleries filled with fossils, fauna, ancient Native American artifacts and other archaeological items. Visitors may want to take some time to explore the planetarium, though it costs an extra $3.

RISD Museum

The RISD Museum is run by the Rhode Island School of Design and showcases a massive selection of works from local contemporary artists to renowned masters from around the globe. You can peruse intriguing exhibitions such as "Making It in America" a collection of 100 pieces including paintings and sculptures that look at the American dream and stories of people trying to get by. And don't miss out on "Made for Eternity," a breathtaking display of ancient art dating back to the Egyptians. Admission to the museum is free every Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., as well as the third Thursday of each month from 5 to 9 p.m. You can even get free or discount parking for your Rhode Island car rental at  the Providence Place or Grant Block lots.
