Tour the Keys in Your Tavernier Rental Car
The city of Tavernier is a community located on the island of Key Largo, in the upper Florida Keys. Key Largo is the first island of the Florida Keys and the originating point of the Overseas Highway to Key West. If you’re cruising through the city in your Tavernier rental car, you might want to stop by John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Biscayne National Park and historic Key West.
Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
Located at 102601 Overseas Hwy, this natural wonder covers 70 nautical square miles of adjacent Atlantic Ocean waters. John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was the very first underwater park in the United States, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 14, 1972. Primary attractions at this park are the coral reefs (such as Molasses Reef) and the associated marine life. The park receives more than a million visitors per year on average, making it the most popular park in the Florida State Parks system. One of the best ways to view the coral reefs is from within a glass-bottom boat, or by snorkeling or scuba diving. The park offers a variety of activities, including canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, picnicking, swimming and wildlife viewing. There’s a 30,000-gallon saltwater aquarium in the visitor center, so be sure to stop by in your Thrifty rental car and see this incredible park.
Biscayne National Park
To enjoy the beauty of Florida’s natural coastline, drive your Tavernier rental car north to Biscayne National Park. Here you’ll find a preserved section of barrier reef and extensive mangrove forest. 95% of this park is water, covering 172,971 acres, and includes Elliott Key, the park's largest island and the first of the true Florida Keys, formed from fossilized coral reef. There are four protected ecosystems within Biscayne National Park which you can view: the shoreline mangrove swamp, the shallow waters of Biscayne Bay, the coral limestone keys and the offshore Florida Reef.
While it’s a bit of a drive south, Key West is a must-see stop in your Thrifty rental car. Located in the Straits of Florida, Key West is situated about 90 miles from Cuba. The island is a hotspot for cruise ships, fishing tourism and a general escape from the 9–5 work week for many Americans. A popular area known as Duval Street offers visitors a 1-mile, 14-block section of town packed with nightlife, shops and restaurants. A fun way to see the town is by parking your Tavernier rental car for a bit and renting a scooter or a bicycle (or just walk as the town is very small). One of the most famous attractions in Key West is a concrete replica of a buoy at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets that claims to be the southernmost point in the United States. Erected in 1983, the famous pillar is one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West.
