Find Southern Charm in Your Louisville Airport Rental Car

When you get to the Thrifty Car Rental counter at the Louisville International Airport, you might hear the representative say either “Welcome to ‘Looeyville” or “Welcome to Loo-a-vul.” Which way is the correct pronunciation? That’s still up for debate, but we can say with 100% confidence that you will have an exciting time during your stay.

Churchill Downs

Less than two miles (or a 5- to 10-minute drive in your Louisville Airport rental car) is the historic Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks. Thoroughbred horse racing meets in the spring, September and then the fall, so be sure to mark your calendars. Occupying over 147 acres, these tracks have been operational since 1875 and have hosted the Breeders’ Cup World Championship eight times. During the Kentucky Derby Day, you’ll find 165,000 horseracing fans right here hoping to win big … or show off their fancy hats.

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom

You can take your Louisville Aiport rental car to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom from SDF airport — or just walk. It’s only .65 miles away! This 63-acre amusement park has a history of pleasing roller coaster fanatics daily with a Terminator-themed coaster, the first Hyper GT-X coaster in the world named “Lightning Run” and a coaster opening in 2016 called the Storm Chaser. This $15 million ride is said to be the first to combine the comfort of a steel coaster with the faster pace of a wood coaster. You’ll also find entertaining shows, including “5-D cinema,” a children’s’ play land and a HUGE water park called Hurricane Bay you’ll definitely want to check out on a hot Louisville day.

Cave Hill Cemetery

Established in 1848 and just a 15-minute drive in your Thrifty rental car, you can search for ancient ghosts or just admire the beauty and history of this famous southern cemetery. Take a stroll back in time as you visit the graves of Civil War Confederate Generals and important military personnel. This nearly full cemetery holds over 120,000 graves! Feel free to schedule an appointment as the weekends fill up and space is limited.

Mega Caverns

Located only 3.4 miles from the Louisville International Airport in your Thrifty rental car are the Mega Caverns. Designed to hold about 50,000 people, this was a popular attraction during the Cold War between Russia and America. Since then the cave has served as an educational tool to teach history and geology to adults and children alike.
