Whether you’re looking to surround yourself with breathtaking natural beauty, immerse yourself in vibrant culture or retrace history, Sasketchewan’s largest city is sure to please. Pick up your Saskatoon rental car at the airport and discover the charm of a riverfront city with welcoming locals and captivating locales.

Historical Trails of 1885

For an amazing glimpse into 19th century native life, take your Thrifty rental car on a day trip back in time. From Saskatoon, head north on Highway 11 and begin your driving tour at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a living reminder of the proud heritage and culture of the First Nations people. From there, continue on Highway 11 to Batoche National Historic Site, the last battlefield of the Northwest Resistance of 1885 and the former home of the Métis settlement in Saskatchewan.

Meewasin Trail

For a great way to get out and enjoy the city, park your Thrifty rental car and hit the trail. The Meewasin Trail runs in and around Saskatoon, spanning both sides of the river, and was previously named one of Canada’s Top 10 Greatest Hikes by Reader’s Digest. It has several access points throughout the city, and you’ll find plenty of maps and signage to help guide your adventure. Whether by foot, by bike or by boat, you’ll find plenty to see and do on Saskatoon’s famous trail.

The Marr Residence

If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to live in an original Temperance Colony, drive your Thrifty rental car to the Marr Residence, the oldest house in Saskatoon. The home dates back to 1884 and was built by Alexander (Sandy) Marr. Still located on its original site, visitors get a glimpse into what early life was like in the new colony. Currently, the home houses an exhibit centered around the relationship between the settlers and the First Nations at the time of the Northwest Resistance of 1885. Guests can also visit a bedroom in the home used to demonstrate how the house was used as a Field Hospital during this time.

Dakota Dunes Golf Links

Golf lovers rejoice … and drive your Thrifty rental car to this award-winning course located on the historical Whitecap Dakota First Nation lands. Designed by one of Canada’s premier golf course architects, Graham Cooke, the course plays host each July to the PGA Tour Canada's Dakota Dunes Open. The majestic 18-hole course is set within natural sand dune formations and indigenous prairie grasses, and features undulating fairways with large greens and five tee deck yardages ranging from 5,100 to 7,300 yards. Guests can also enjoy a full-service pro shop, restaurant and two mobile beverage carts.

Handmade House

To browse a wide selection of artisan crafts and handmade goodies from some of Saskatchewan’s most talented craftspeople, set the GPS in your Thrifty rental car to 710 Broadway Avenue. The Handmade House has been serving as a year-round craft “fair” for almost 40 years and is independently operated by its members. Here, you’ll find treasures in varying materials: paper, fiber, glass, metal, wood and more. From distinctive jewelry and wearable art, to handmade cards and beautiful pottery, you’ll find souvenirs you’ll treasure at this local Saskatoon gem.

Ayden Kitchen & Bar

For a taste of what some call Canada’s best restaurant, drive your Thrifty rental car to this hot spot housed in a converted diner. Ayden is the much-heralded brainchild of former Top Chef Canada winner, Dale MacKay, who has enlisted the help of other notable foodie favorites like his co-chef and butcher, Nathan Guggenheimer, GM and mixologist, Christopher Cho, and head chef, Jesse Zuber to create locally sourced and globally inspired comfort food. From cocktails to main plates, the vibe is warm, inviting and delicious.
