Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens
For a trip to the wild side of Sanford, visit the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens. This 116-acre zoo and botanical garden is located north of Orlando, making it a short drive in your Sanford Field Airport rental car. The zoo is situated at the intersection of I-4 and Hwy 17-92 near the city of Sanford. Boasting over 400 animals, the zoo offers visitors the chance to experience educational encounters, such as zookeeper chats and animal interactions. Inside the zoo are two children’s rides: a small carousel and The Little Florida Coast Line, a ridable miniature railway with a G-16 streamliner locomotive that was originally built in 1951.

Little Big Econ State Forest
If you’re up for a little hiking, consider stopping by the Little Big Econ State Forest in your Thrifty rental car. Located at 1350 Snow Hill Rd., this state forest is just 3.3 miles east of the downtown Oviedo on Florida Country Road 426. The most interesting feature of this park is the 54-mile Econlockhatchee River, which winds east to west inside the forest. This park is perfect for picnicking, bird watching, fishing, hunting, hiking, horseback riding and mountain bike riding.

Harry P. Leu Gardens
If you don’t mind taking a little drive south toward Orlando in your Sanford Field Airport rental car, this nature-lover’s garden is sure to please. Located at 1920 N Forest Ave. in Orlando, Harry P. Leu Gardens offers visitors a semi-tropical and tropical garden-like atmosphere in the heart of Orlando, Florida. The garden is made up of nearly 50 acres of landscaped grounds and lakes with meandering trails shaded by 200-year-old oaks and forests of camellias. This park is open to the public. In the center of these gardens is the Leu House Museum, which has been meticulously restored and is on the National Historical Register. Guided tours of the house illustrate turn of the century Florida living and are available every 30 minutes.
