Exploring The Cities of North Carolina

If you're looking for a Southern locale for your next getaway, plan a trip to one of the enchanting cities of North Carolina. The state is known for its immense natural beauty, and whether you arrive via Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, or Greensboro-Piedmont International Triad Airport, you'll be greeted by stunning skylines filled with Smoky Mountain and Blue Ridge peaks. Even the bustling capital city, which is home to the Raleigh, contains open green spaces and lush wilderness. But there's much more to see in the Tar Heel State. Try some of these vacation ideas when you visit one of North Carolina's major cities:

While smaller than North Carolina's other major cities, Greensboro is a delightful destination with plenty to offer. Get a local art experience by visiting some of the many galleries, including Artery, Steel Hall and Yew Tree.

Nature lovers will enjoy an exploration of Bog Garden, while history buffs won't want to pass up the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. While you're here, take an excursion to the nearby town of Gibsonville, to visit the North Carolina Farm Fresh apple farm, where you can pick your own fruit, flowers, and plants.

Make your way through Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, pick up your rental car, and check out some of the hot spots of this culturally rich city. Peruse the galleries and exhibits of the Mint Museum of Art, Discovery Place, Levine Museum in the New South and The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture Sports fans will have a great time here - the metropolis is home to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR races, as well as the U.S. National Whitewater Center, a rapids-filled water park for the extreme adventurer.

Start your trip with a visit to the capital, Raleigh, where you can find the official state art, history and natural sciences museums. Visitors can also tour:

  • The state Capitol building,
  • Haywood Hall House and Gardens
  • Historic Boylan Heights

Then, head to Durham, which is brimming with nightlife options. Grab a bite to eat at Crook's Corner, or Watt's Grocery for some authentic southern fare, then sit down for a drink at the renowned Full Steam Brewery before stopping by Cat's Cradle for an evening of live indie rock.
