Great Places to Visit During Your Maine Vacation

From Atlantic Coast seaports to New England forests, Maine has it all when it comes to a stellar vacation away from the hub bub of everyday life. This is state where you can really unplug, recharge your batteries, and get back in touch with nature.

Whether you are heading out into the countryside or spending some time in Maine's cities, there is a relaxing and unpretentious atmosphere with friendly locals no matter where you go. Next time you plan a trip to Maine, check out some of these stellar attractions so that you can understand why travelers love to venture to The Pine Tree State:

Part outdoor haven, part foodie, Mecca, Portland is a unique seaport with fabulous seafood restaurants right on the harbor, and old-fashioned New England downtown and more winter sports than you can ever fit into one trip. Once you land at Portland International Jetport, you will clearly see why Bon Appetit magazine dubbed Portland the "Foodiest Small Town in America."

The city prides itself on its local farm to table movement, and seaside restaurants, all of which feature the best fruits of the sea from the nearby Casco Bay. Sink your teeth into perfectly cooked Maine lobster at places like Fore Street Restaurant, DiMillo's On the Water and Petite Jacqueline.

One of the state's most breathtaking lighthouses is located in Portland at Cape Elizabeth, just south of the city. The Portland Head Light is still maintained and fully functional, which is pretty impressive considering it has been guiding ships into the harbor since 1791. Today you can tour the museum dedicated to the lighthouse, and learn about the impact these buildings have had on the state across the centuries. Be sure to bring the little ones— children younger are admitted for free, and children ages 6 to 18 can enter for just $1.

Agritourism is a huge draw in Auburn and the surrounding central Maine region, which you can see from the numerous orchards and farms located around town. While this city grows plenty of wholesome produce, it's the maple syrup and apples that are well known around here.

If you are in town from July to October, be sure to make a stop at Greenwood Orchards and pick up a jug of organically produced apple cider or pie. Wallingford’s Orchard is another crowd favorite, especially where their apple cider donuts are concerned.
