See what's exciting in Mississippi

The South is known for delicious comfort foods, great live music and welcoming hospitality, and you'll find all this and more with a trip to Mississippi. Named for the Mississippi River, this Southern state boasts a subtropical climate, so you enjoy a warm temperature no matter what time of year you visit.

Mississippi is known for its literature and music, so you can expect to enjoy plenty of culture here in between sampling down-home cooking and exploring places like Jackson, the state's capital city, after landing at Jackson - Evers International Airport.

Check out the local museums
The Museum of Natural Science is the largest museum in the state, and offers exhibits displaying information on natural habitats, and wildlife of Mississippi. Here, you'll find 2.5 miles of trails to explore, then head inside to see fossils, colorful murals, a tree house, a swamp that's home to:

  • Alligators
  • Fish
  • Turtles
  • A 100,000-gallon aquarium

Learn about the history of the city at The Oaks House Museum, one of the oldest residences in Jackson. The Greek-Revival home was built in 1853, and here you can see how people lived at the end of the 19th century into the start of the 20th century.

Experience Jackson's culture
Eudora Welty was an author who lived in Jackson for almost 80 years in her childhood home. The Eudora Welty House was first built in 1925 by her parents, and she did all of her writing in an upstairs bedroom.

Over the years, Welty built up a lovely garden on the grounds, and in 2001 the home became a Mississippi Landmark. A year later it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fans of Welty can visit the home of this beloved writer, exploring the rooms and garden to see her collections of:

  • Books
  • Photographs
  • Paintings
  • Furniture

You can also plan an evening out at the Mississippi Coliseum, a multipurpose arena in Jackson that hosts sporting events as well as concerts throughout the year.

For a one-of-a-kind experience, don't miss the Clinton Presidential Center, which highlights major accomplishments and archives from the 42th president, Bill Clinton. The center also features an on-site restaurant, an educational and a cultural space, as well as permanent and temporary exhibits highlighting the campaigns, policy alcoves, life at the White House (including a full-size replica of the Oval Office) and Clinton's two terms as president.
