Live la Pura Vida in Costa Rica

After you land at the San Jose International Airport in Costa Rica, be sure to pick up a Thrifty rental car and explore the sites — both in and outdoor. From local markets and local cuisine to national treasures and breath-taking landscapes, to live “the pure life” of this country take your time to take it all in.

The National Theater of Costa Rica

Originally opened to the public in 1897, this tourist hot spot is a must see. If you’re planning a visit, be sure to spend some time admiring the architecture, notably the two statues by the front entrance Calderón de la Barca and Ludwig van Beethoven. The theater is home to several performances each week that range from The National Orchestra, Ballet and traveling acts. Admission to each event varies, so be sure to book in advance.

The Markets of San Jose

Looking to shop like a local? Check out the arts, food and interesting finds of the Markets of San Jose. Consisting of more than three blocks and storefronts, the outdoor market features fresh produce, crafts, souvenirs and more. For less crafts and more traditional market items, check out the Central Market, which is entirely indoors. Here you’ll find clothes, jewelry, luggage, drinks, meals and even a wide selection of local meats. As in most markets, prices and haggling are part of the local charm — so don’t be afraid to ask for a deal.

Beaches, Rainforests and Volcanos

San Jose boasts some of the most beautifully untouched and preserved landscapes in the world. Whether you’re up for lounging on the beach, taking a tour through the canopies or going on a hike by the volcano sites, you’ll find all the adventure you’re looking for and then some in San Jose. Just about 45 minutes outside of the city is Jaco Beach where you can rent a board from a local surf shop for only $5 a day. If touring the rainforest is more your speed, try the canopy tours of Monteverde for a zip line tour over all of the lush rainforest landscapes and wildlife below. Or, discover a place that begs to be explored with an Arenal Volcano tour. Explore river rapid rides, hot springs, waterfalls, horseback riding and mountain biking by booking a fun-filled guided tour. However you’d like to explore the sights, you’ll find a fun way to get there.

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum

For a tour of all that glitters and glimmers point your GPS between Central and 2nd Avenues to visit Museo del Oro Precolombino (as it’s called locally). With more than 1,600 artifacts that date back to 500 A.D., this museum includes many must-see exhibits like Costa Rica’s first gold coin, amulets, figurines and even a life-sized gold warrior. For more valuable coins, you can also checkout the Museo Numismático in the same building with currency that dates back to 1236. Either is open 9:15 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily, excluding major holidays. Admission is around $10 USD depending on the exchange rate.
