Flying High in Your Mountain Home Rental Car

Located about 40 miles southeast of Boise, this high-desert community is the proud home of the Mountain Home Air Force Base 366th Fighter Wing. Hop in your rental car to explore the area — by land — and partake in year-round recreation and outdoor activities.

Mountain Home Historical Museum

To fully appreciate current-day Mountain Home, you have to get a glimpse into its past. Luckily, you’ll find just that at the Mountain Home Historical Museum. Drive your Mountain Home rental car to the former 1908 Carnegie Public Library building, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, to trace the history of Mountain Home and discover artifacts on mining, agriculture and railroad. The museum also celebrates the culture of the local community, including Basque, Chinese and Native American heritages.

Sweetbriar Vineyard and Winery

For some of the area’s best sips, set your Thrifty rental car GPS to 12150 E Highway 20, just northeast of Mountain Home on the road to Sun Valley. Here you’ll find Sweetbriar Vineyard and Winery, a local favorite with a vineyard of 800 plants that produces nearly 100 cases a year of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Lemberger, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Vignoles. For a truly VIP experience, call ahead and make an appointment for a private tasting.

Desert Canyon Golf Course

One of the best golfing experiences in Idaho is right in Mountain Home. Drive your Thrifty rental car to this challenging course to tee off on 18 holes and enjoy a full bar and grill and pro shop. The front nine offers large trees and elevated greens, while the back nine has four holes built around a large canyon with water in play on five holes. The entire course is a real test from the back tees, but for a more relaxing round, choose the white and orange tee boxes.

Anderson Ranch Reservoir

To view one of the world’s largest earth-filled dams, drive your Thrifty rental car about 20 miles east to the Anderson Ranch Reservoir. Here you’ll find the Anderson Ranch Dam and an activity-filled 17-mile-long reservoir that’s bordered by 50 miles of shoreline. From bird watching to boating, fishing to camping, the Reservoir offers plenty of outdoor fun.

Atlanta… Idaho

In just three hours you can travel back in time to experience an authentic 1800s mining town. Just drive your Thrifty rental car to Atlanta, Idaho. Most of the original buildings were destroyed in a 1941 fire, but several structures were preserved and have been recorded on the National Historic Register. Atlanta is home to the oldest established post office in Elmore County, founded in 1867, and despite its ghost-town resemblance and mountainous isolation, the town is still very much alive with 40 year-round residents.

Bruneau Dunes State Park

To view the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, drive your Mountain Home rental car to Bruneau Dunes State Park. The impressive dune rises 470 feet high above small lakes in the high desert south of Mountain Home. With a varied terrain of desert, dune, prairie, lake and marsh, the park offers opportunities to observe nocturnal species and partake in activities like fishing, bird watching, hiking, swimming and camping. You can also marvel at the night sky at Idaho’s largest public observatory.
