Great things to do in Georgia

Many people regard Atlanta as the capital of the South, as it is the largest city in the region and offers up plenty of cultural offerings. Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport is the busiest airport in the world—mostly because there is always something going on in this sprawling metropolis, from family-friendly hot spots to quirky neighborhoods. Some of the best places to check out during your next trip to the Gateway to the South include:

The World of Coca-Cola
Since Atlanta is the headquarters for this famous American brand and the hot days are practically made for a cold beverage in the city, the World of Coca-Cola is one of the must-sees on any Atlanta travel itinerary. Here, you can walk through exhibits that trace the history of this delicious carbonated drink and sample 100 different sodas made by the company—some of which you might have never tried before.

Georgia Aquarium
As the largest of its kind in the world, this is a must-see for all travelers, especially if you are bringing the kids along. Located in downtown Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium holds 10 million gallons of fresh and salt water and features 60 exhibits, including a new dolphin gallery that was unveiled in 2011 that features special effects and state-of-the-art lighting.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site
Located in the Sweet Auburn District, this historic site honors one of the most prolific figures in American history, and serves as the burial ground for the leader of the Civil Rights Movement and his wife. Here, you can see the birthplace of Dr. King and listen to his stirring speeches and sermons that changed the course of social change in the South and the U.S.

Little Five Points
In a city dominated by name brands, it's refreshing to have a little Bohemian oasis, and Little Five Points is just the ticket for all things alternative in Atlanta. This is one of the best places in town to hear live music—from reggae to Americana—and you can take your pick from offbeat vintage shops, laid-back coffee houses, and no-frills pubs.

Sports, sports and more sports
Atlanta is a huge sports town, and the locals here love their teams. To really get in the spirit of the city, don't hesitate to make a day of it at Turner Field seeing the Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves, the National Football Leagues’ Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome or the National Basketball Association's Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.
