It’s the European Union’s third biggest city and offers an exciting time for any visitor. Madrid, Spain combines art, culinary culture, nightlife and trendsetting new attractions to create an experience to remember. But, the city is also bustling and big. Long before you land at Madrid Airport, we recommend having a plan for your stay. Start making yours by exploring the destinations below.

The Golden Triangle of Art

After picking up your Thrifty rental car in Madrid Airport, make your first stop one of Europe’s most celebrated art landmarks. The Golden Triangle of Art is actually three museums that are within just a short distance of each other. And, they all deserve your time. The Prado Museum has one of the world’s best collections of Spanish art, including a large section dedicated to Franciso de Goya. The second museum, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, specializes in art from the 20th century. It houses extensive collections of works by Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. Rounding out the triangle is the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, where you can find paintings from the 13th to 20th centuries.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Park your Thrifty rental car and stretch your legs as you go for a walk in the footsteps of kings and queens. The Royal Palace of Madrid houses 3,418 rooms covering more than a million square feet of floor space. Inside, you can find a wealth of art, including paintings by Caravaggio, Fransico de Goya and others.  You can also explore the massive Royal Library of antique books and the Royal Armory, which contains weapons and armor dating back to the 1200s. Outside, there are plazas and gardens, many of which are masterpieces of architecture in their own right.

Adventurous Appetites Tapas Tour

Enjoy a night out on the town with others as you sample authentic Spanish food, learn about the history of select dishes and gain a new understanding of Spanish food culture. The tour is hosted by local food experts who make sure your time with them includes plenty of laughs as well as delicious food.

Retiro Park

Enjoy more than 300 acres of parkland that are filled with a variety of things to do. The Spanish royal family originally owned Retiro Park, but today, it’s open to the public and a must-see destination in Madrid. There are cafes to visit for food and coffee. You can also admire a giant fountain or stop by one of several museums. One of the most striking features in the museum is a replica of the Crystal Palace, which was a giant glass building in England. In addition to all of these impressive landmarks, the park also fills up with performers who play live music, dance, create art and much more.

EXIT Madrid — Live Escape Game

This live action game gives you the chance to participate in adventures where you have to escape from strange scenarios by solving mysteries and puzzles. There are a handful of missions, and each offers a different level of difficulty. You could solve an art heist, prevent a nuclear attack and more. Which will you choose? Plug EXIT Madrid into your Thrifty rental car’s GPS and add some thrills to your trip.

El Junco Jazz Club

If it’s jazz you’re looking for, you owe it to yourself to hop in your Thrifty rental car and head down to El Junco Jazz Club. The setting is intimate and the atmosphere is lively. You can dance to live bands as well as DJs. On select nights, the club hosts musicians from other genres, such as flamenco.
