Lake Perris State Recreation Area
Located 11 miles south of Riverside on Highway 60 or 1-215, Lake Perris State Recreation Area is a manmade lake which was built in 1973. Situated in a mountain-rimmed valley between Moreno valley and Perris, the park offers a multitude of recreational activities, including guided hikes on the trail around the lake, camping, fishing, picnicking, horseback riding, swimming (in designated areas) and rock climbing. The park also hosts the annual Big Rock Triathlon at sprint and Olympic distances. The lake is open for boating from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from Thursday to Monday. There is also a gallery called The Ya'i Heki' Regional Indian Museum. The museum tells the story of the monumental State Water Project and focuses on the culture and history of the native peoples of the Southern California desert region.

Hemet Museum
Just a short drive in your Thrifty rental car, Hemet Museum is located at 2345 Searl Pkwy, in Hemet, California. This state-of-the-art museum complex is home to a fascinating array of Native American artifacts and Ice Age fossils, which were found nearby at Diamond Valley Lake. Kids will love “Max,” the largest mastodon ever found in the Western United States, as well as “Xena,” a Columbian mammoth. Another exhibit houses “Little Stevie,” a large mastodon installed beneath the museum floor to recreate the actual dig site. Hemet Museum houses nearly 1,000,000 specimens and has been designed to provide world-class facilities for the research, curation and presentation. Enjoy the Dire Wolves, saber-toothed cat or the many other fossils, local family history or Native American artifacts at this exciting museum.
